Patchwork Dentistry is dentistry where the underlying issue of pain, decay or regression is not addressed, instead a quick fix and, sometimes cheaper, short-term solution is provided. Dentists are not inherently trying to mislead their patient, but, sometimes choose the quick fix to provide an immediate resolution that meets the requirements of an insurance plan and is cheaper. Patchwork Dentistry offers ends up costing more money in the end, causes more pain and takes more time to resolve.

Here's an example in a completely different field; imagine you have a leaking pipe underneath your kitchen sink. You get quotes from two plumbers. The first plumber offers to wrap the pipe in plumber’s tape and putty. The second plumber recommends cutting the pipe, replacing the leaking section and soldering it. The second plumber wants to charge you three times what the first quoted. You decide to hire the first plumber to fix the problem. Six months later, the leak begins again, the plumber you hired comes back and fixes the pipe again by wrapping more tape. A year later, the pipe breaks spewing water on the kitchen floor and down into your basement. Now you have a real problem.

Recently I began working with Dentistry at Vitality Health and I’ve noticed some misconceptions that patients have about dental implants.

1. The Lowest Price is the Best Deal.

The most common question I receive from potential patients is, “What’s your lowest price for an implant?” These patients seem to believe that the cheapest price is the best price.

Question 1: What are dental x-rays and why are they so important?

Dr. Singh: Dental X-rays (radiographs) are images of your teeth that your dentist uses to evaluate your oral health. These X-rays are very low levels of radiation used to generate images, thereby allowing us to view areas under the gums and bone. Dental X-rays may seem complex, but they’re actually very common tools that are as important as your teeth cleanings. They can be useful for numerous things, such as:

·         Decay – decay between teeth is often not visible

·         Recurrent decay – new decay under old fillings

·         Bone loss—an x-ray will tell us the location, degree and severity of the bone loss

·         Infections—look for infections around roots and inside bone

·         Teeth—detects defects in teeth, presence and positions of teeth, impacted or extra teeth;

·         Pathology – detects cysts, tumors or other abnormalities
