What are Dental Implants?
Natural Looking Teeth
Dental Implants are natural looking and functioning artificial teeth. They provide a very effective means to replace one or more missing or failing teeth. Dental implants can take the form of single teeth, multiple teeth, entire rows of teeth (called arches), or implant-supported dentures.
Components of Dental Implants
Modern day dental implants are comprised of 3 primary components: the post, the crown, and the abutment.
Consider the post as the artificial root for your tooth. They are inert, medical-grade titanium screws that are designed to permanently fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. The number of posts used, depend on the number of teeth needed. Advanced 3D CAT imaging allows our dentists to drill and place posts at precise angles and depths for optimal strength, and minimum discomfort.
The crown is the visible part of the dental implant and can be considered the “tooth”. Most crowns are made of porcelain and are designed to improve both the smile and the alignment with other teeth in order to achieve a strong bite.
The abutment joins the post and the crown. It’s designed to strengthen the whole dental implant placement, while allowing for access to the post.
