Dental Implants and the Restoration of a Person’s Bite

by | Nov 23, 2018

Dr. Singh discusses how a person’s natural bite (the position where a person’s teeth come together) can be restored with Dental Implants.

Why is the position of a person’s bite so important?

Dr.Singh:

People bite when their jaw muscles push the teeth together. A person bite is most comfortable when the teeth line up properly and meet at a natural bite position. When people loose teeth, or when teeth wear down, the position of their bite changes. The jaws “over close.” This action, the over closed bite, overextends the jaw muscles and creates the potential for jaw pain, headaches, and neck pain. This is called a “collapsed bite”. The only way to solve this is to restore a person’s bite to its natural level.

How can you restore the bite?

Dr.Singh:

That’s where dental implants come in. Dental implants can help to restore a person’s normal bite position. They provide support for the associated jaw muscles, and for the lips. The natural bite position is not only important for eating properly, but also to prevent premature aging on the face. A person with a collapsed bite looks older because their chin moves closer to the nose (shrinking lower face height). This gives the appearance of an old person. When you place complete rows of teeth (arches), both in the upper and lower jaws, you are able to build in extra height to compensate for the loss of height associated with lost gum and bone tissue. This extra height can help to restore a person’s natural bite position. Dental Implants are truly versatile in what they can do, both from functional and cosmetic perspectives.
